This research is part of a larger, multiyear project, called Samhälliga beredskapsnivåer för delade autonomi, financed by Vinnova, the innovation agency of Sweden, and Keolis AB, a public transit operator and subsidiary of Keolis Group, headquartered in Paris.
Previous research into the willingness of users to be in on-demand mobility, like Uber, served as the foundation for investigations into how comfortable users might be in on-demand, autonomous mobility. Our findings revealed that people were nervous about riding in autonomous vehicles- not because they. were afraid of the technology, but because they were afraid of other people. We termed this "sharing anxiety", a concern that comes from the lack of authority figures inside a public space. This represents a significant barrier to future autonomous mobility offers.
We are developing an index for descriptive evaluation of regions, so that city planners can understand which dimensions their region are already open to shared autonomous public transport, and which dimensions are less ready. We then hope to offer prescriptive measures for addressing these needs in short and long term.
